Spirit Sewing

Spirit Sewing, 2019

A loose unfinished feminine calligraphy, written on the soulmade from thrifted household linens, sheets, curtains.

For me engaging in a sustainable art practice requires receptiveness, and creative activity that cultivates space for the unconscious to be revealed. I think of John Cage and his instruction for listening to the breath between the words, or creating from the limbic system, rather than the prefrontal cortex. Work received not conceived.

I’ve come to embrace this particular practice as Spirit Sewing. I made these in 2019 during a residency The Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, a channeling of energies awakened by my experience of the people and place of New Orleans.
