Pre-Order Giveaway – Open Till MAY 4

To celebrate The Improv Handbook’s imminent release on April 28, I am sponsoring a Pre-Order Giveaway through midnight of  April 28, 2015.

Two fabulous prizes and two chances to win: 1) An original color score mini-quilt made by me and featured in the Improv Handbook – winner’s choice from the options below, and 2) a custom thread collection from Aurifil inspired by my use of color in the book.

Two steps to enter: 1) Pre-order a copy of The Improv Handbook through any online vendor (including Abrams or Amazon) prior to April 28. OR pick up a copy at QuiltCon or at one of the locations I’m teaching at prior to the book’s official release date. 2) Comment on this post as to why you like the process of improv patchwork, or why you are curious to try it for the first time, OR tell me which color score you will choose if you win. In good faith, I will ask the two lucky winners of the giveaway to assure me that they pre-ordered or purchased a copy of the Improv Handbook prior to March 16, in order to claim their prizes.

The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters: A Guide to Creating, Quilting, and Living Courageously

Not only does the Improv Handbook present a flexible approach to quilt making that breaks free of old rules and expectations in a fun, accessible way. It’s a comprehensive guide to improvisational patchwork featuring:

  • over 15 innovative ruler-free sewing techniques
  • tips for accessing intuitive color
  • mind tools that cultivate presence, spontaneity, and risk taking
  • experiential design exercises on scale, line, borders and more
  • 10 “scores” for visual improvisation that free quilters to create quilts unlike anyone else’s
  • my quilts and a contributor quilt gallery of 22 amazing test quilts based on the scores

For the book, I illustrated various aspects of color through a series of strip pieced “color scores.” I am turning these samples into 21″ square mini-quilts to giveaway throughout the year. The 1st winner of the Improv Handbook Pre-Order Giveaway gets to choose either…

Hue & Neutrals Color Score from the Improv Handbook

“Color Score: Hue & Neutrals” or

Value Color Score from the Improv Handbook

“Color Score: Value.” Which will you choose if you are the winner???

Improv Handbook Aurifil thread colors

To a second lucky winner, Aurifil has generously offered a thread collection based on the prominent colors used in the quilts I created for the Improv Handbook. Isn’t it lovely!

I love improv piecing and the whole improvisational, unplanned approach to quiltmaking. I enjoy the design decisions that arise during the process, and not knowing how the project will look til it’s finished.

  2. Allison CB says:

  6. Barb Callie says:

Just pre-ordered your book from Amazon (it shows in my husband’s name: Anthony Pascone because he has the prime shipping). He is a wonderful jazz pianist and I have been in awe for years at his ability to improvise. It is intriguing to think of having my own improvising voice! Looking forward to seeing your book. Thanks.

  7. Karen says:

I just preordered your book at Amazon. I became so happy just looking at the pictures from the book that I knew I had to have it! If I were so lucky to win, I would choose the Hue and Neutrals. Thanks for offering a giveaway.

  8. I preordered through Amazon. I am young in quilting years and when I began, was CERTAIN I would never, never make one of those awful, messy modern, deconstructed quilts. But I have been drawn, inexorably, in just that direction, through Freddy and Gwennie’s books, Rayna Gilman’s wonderful work spawned by the question “what if??”, and into a journey into free form, design on the wall, spontaneous quilting; discovering the joy of flying without a net. The “scores” will be perfect for charity quilting and I have begun putting together fabric packs for our group with that in mind.

  9. debby says:

I pre-ordered! I am so looking forward to getting this book. I know it will be an inspiration in my work. Love your mini-quilts, and the collection of aurifil threads is just yummy!

  10. Melissa Reilly says:

my big breakthrough came in an improv class last summer with Heather Jones- it was when I put away my rotary cutter and picked up my scissors instead. It was thrilling. I was so excited – heather asked me share with the class! I let go of corners, points, straight lines and just… Played. I framed those three small pieces and have them on the wall of my sewing room to, remind me of the day I embraced my own voice. Can’t wait for the book to arrive- congratulations on such a huge achievement.

  11. Judy Dunlap says:

    90) I was lucky to purchase your book and got it signed at QuiltCon. So very excited to have one of the really first copies. What a beautiful book. Full of information and great photos. I also was one of your testers of the flying geese score. It took me out of my box and I became more confident in sewing without a ruler. As my quilt was not picked by your or QuiltCon. I am very pleased with my outcome. Thanks for letting me in your challenge! If I was to be the winner of your give away I would be so very excited to have either one. Just because you made it! Thanks. Hope it’s me!!

  12. Joanne C. Donovan says:

Hi Sherri Lynn! I just pre-ordered your book (plus another “modern” one) on Amazon, and am looking forward to perusing thru the pages! I saw Jacquie Gerring doing wacky log cabin blocks (online, somewhere), and that was the first thing “modern” I’ve tried! Love them!! I want to learn more!! As far as the colors … I love bright colors, so the “Hue & Neutrals” is a given for me!! But then I might be tempted by the “Values”, too! The threads would be so fun to work with … I want my quilting to SHOW!!! I was sent here by Bonnie Hunter, just like everyone else!! Thanks for the chance to win something cool!

  13. Debbie Wallace says:

I ordered the book from Amazon the minute I heard about it, and am so bummed to have to wait, But I know it ill be worth it. I’ve taken oodles of classes from famous quilt teachers. Now it’s time to start listening to my inner self. I think your book will be a great reinforcement if this and can hardly wait to get going with it. Just looking at the preview makes me want to head for my studio.

Soooo sad the book has been delayed, but mark of a good publisher to fix a quality issue. These things happen. I would choose the value quilt probably – would be amazing to have that choice!
