surfing an ocean of color

Hmmmm I’m starting something new!  Inspired by the sea-foam and the black sand beaches of the Marin Headlands, I gathered this color palette of hand-dyed fabrics.

Picking a palette is a fist step, but the true story of color unfolds in the relationship and proportion of hues as they manifest into pattern.

My students at OCMQG workshop this weekend will get a live preview of this new curvy modern improv as it evolves. Not only will they be learning techniques for curve piecing, and approaches to improvisation, they will DIVE into a deep intuitive OCEAN of color and learn to ride their own WAVE!

i love how the ocean, sea shore, and beaches can look so different in so many places. i picked the colors for my iching quilt based on the ocean/beach when i surf. i hadn’t been surfing in over a year and i thought that this would help me reconnect with the ocean (i did finally make it out to surf a week ago and loved it!). i chose colors based on wet sand, dry sand, white wash, reef, different shades of water…but now as cast coins i’m like, “aaaah, i don’t know if there will be enough variety in color/value placement!” but, i’m just letting it go and letting the process take over. :)

can’t wait to see what your fabric turns in to!!!

  2. Hmmmm…. Nice colors! I wonder if some of them could be Cherrywood? :) I look forward to meeting you at QuiltCon in February. I will have a booth there if you need to pet some more hand-dyed fabric!

    • No, I dye all my own fabrics but I will look for your booth at QuiltCon! The fabrics on your website look beautiful and at a very reasonable price. Thanks for being in touch.

  3. Cant wait to finally meet you and get to play with you! See you tomorrow! Safe travels.
