New Year’s Day Stewed Tomatoes

Here are Allyn’s tips for a Southern New Year’s Day plate of blessings. She serves up Black-eyed peas for good luck, and collard greens & cabbage for money & prosperity, stewed tomatoes for compassion.

Next up: corn bread for down home comfort!

Stewed Tomatoes for Compassion

Start with cans of skinned, whole tomatoes, add a little tomato sauce, and bread.

Add brown sugar!

Stir and stew in your crockpot for five hours... and serve!

    I guess I am a Southern girl where everything has bacon fat, but stewed tomatoes in my world are a spicy concoction of bacon, onion, green bell pepper and tomatoes with spices and a slow cooked bunch of tomatoes. Differences in traditions. Maybe that is why I sometimes lack compassion.
