Mod-Mood Quilt Giveaway ~ Mod-Mood Quilt Button

My moods so far this summer haven’t been fantastic, but on the upside my quilt is looking great. Using my moods to set color parameters has broken me out of my usual color preferences. These color combinations are not what I expected. I’m curious to hear from anybody out there who is quilting along with me, virtually or in reality. So here’s a giveaway to get you talking.

Modern Mood Quilt Giveaway

For your chance to win, choose your favorite color (it doesn’t have to be a color from my quilt) and tell me the range of emotions you associate with that color. If you are currently quilting along, how is your process unfolding? What have you learned about color? If you are following along virtually, has the project sparked any new ideas for you? The randomly chosen winner of the giveaway will receive a 1/2 yard of hand-dyed fabrics in the color range listed in their comment.

Bonus: Post a Mod Mood Quilt button on your blog and receive an additional 1/2 yard of hand-dyed fabric if you are the winner of the giveaway. Include a link to your post or blog in your comments.

This giveaway will be open until midnight on September 1, 2010.

All colors are great but Blue! Blue! Blue! is my favorite.

  2. Merry G. says:

I love pink. Pink says “I’m a girl!” It is soft and giggly and frilly and sweet and just a nice color. All the other colors go with it. And I love it!

  3. Love your blog! I added your button to my blog…hope it helps. My favorite color is PURPLE!! All shades of purple…light to dark…paired with black the purples just glow!! Also purple looks great with most all other colors on the color wheel…what a wonderful color…purple!

    • Sherri Lynn Wood says:

Thanks Cheri! I can see that you are quite a committed quilt maker. Your grandchildren are so lucky. I’m sure they will receive many beautiful PURPLE quilts made with love.

  4. Jennifer says:

Green! Every other color goes well with some shade of green … it’s truly a neutral in it’s own right. My favorite shade is a soft, sage green which speaks peace to me, but I do love brighter shades like lime … how can anyone resist?!

  5. judi cabanaw says:

It is so hard to choose a favorite color. Robin Egg Blue comes to mind, soft and sweet color

    • Sherri Lynn Wood says:

What is your association with Robin Egg Blue? It seems like an old fashioned color. Do you have memories associated with it or are you a bird lover perhaps?

  6. Jeanne says:

My favorite color is green. It reminds me of spring when everything comes to life again. It also represents a way of living, being responsible with the gifts we are given.

  7. I love greens reminds me of the landscaper colors but lately my FAVORITE to work with lately is Grays…. Different shades just really seem to set off my work.

  8. Louise says:

It’s hard to pick one color but my 1st thought is orange & all the shades of it. Fall is my favorite season & Hallowe’en is my favorite holiday. I have such wonderful childhood memories of being 10 yrs old, living in IL & wandering about the countryside on a breezy day, the smell of fall in the air & the beautiful leaves everywhere. I could go on & on but you know what I mean. Orange & the colors that go with it take me there instantly.

  9. I love red. Red says hot, sexy, vibrant, alive. Now that I am over 40 that is what I want to be!

  10. Sharon says:

I love GREEN….all shades…its because its so fresh and clean…and mix it with purple and I am in heaven…not sure why

  11. Sandi says:

I came over from Pat Sloan’s blog. The colorful photo of your quilt in progress really caught my eye. :-) My favorite color is generally pink. It’s connected to my music teacher’s love of pink and the positive influence she had in my life. Sometimes I am in a soft pink mood which means I am relaxed and comfortable. Then sometimes I am in a hot pink mood which means I am “woman hear me roar”. LOL! The other color that I like is yellow….. a pale soft yellow that reminds me of baby chicks and butter. And sometimes just a bit of a brighter yellow that reminds me of dandelions. I love color and would love some hand-dyed fabrics in any color. :-)

  12. Jennifer says:

I love every shade of blue, it makes me smile!

  13. Wendy Tulloch says:

Lately I have been drawn to orange. Anything from the softest peach tones to almost red. Orange seems to blend with and contrast well with many other colors too. I use it to make a piece a bit more special and interesting. It makes me feel clever and satisfied to include a touch of the unexpected that ends up looking just right because of how it was used.

  14. Debby, Chester NY says:

I am currently taking a color workshop & we all had to pick a “focus” color as a base for different color harmonies we are working on. I picked orange, which is my favorite color but the least favorite color of just about everyone else in the group. I love orange. It seems like such a happy color. Who could look at orange & feel sad or depressed. You just have to feel happy!

  15. Mary Valaika says:

Blues/Greens. All shades of them. They are calm, relaxed, restful; but alert, no sleepy. Does that make sense, lol!

  16. Lynda M says:

I really love your curved process. Fun to watch it come together.
My favorite color is pink. Just seem like a happy color to me.
    Thanks

  17. Dana says:

I love teals. I find them very soothing and they can be matched with just about anything to keep them soothing or jazz them up.

  18. Donna Joy says:

Greens are my favorite color. They are serene, calming and brings of feeling of nature into the projects. Then there is the cheerful yellows. Yellow reminds me of sunshine, sunflowers and happy times outside.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  19. Sally Howard says:

Blues – the sea, sky and mountains in the NW are often blue, from the bright blue inside a glacier to the dark blue silhouette of the Olympic range after the sun sets.

  20. Janet says:

I just love to work with blue. It was my mother’s fav. color. I love all colors but her color, blue, just makes me feel safe and warm. Because it reminds me of her.

  21. Mary says:

Wow! That is an amazing piece!! The color placements are just fabulous!

If I were doing it I would be in a green mood. It has been my favorite color for my whole life. As a four year old I told my grandmother that I wanted a “green dress and green shoes”.

  22. Pat Bandura says:

My favorite color is red. It can be vibrant bright and happy as well as deep and solid
I am new to your site but definitely want to go back and read up on this process

  23. anna fogg says:

TEAL. Teal and any derivation of it makes me feel settled and calm. It is blue with a bit of green sometimes, it is sometimes almost turquoise, it is a calm slow-moving water in New Zealand, it is the backside of my quilt that I wrap myself in, it is the color of a sweater I loved so much that I took it to Home Depot and had that exact color made – and which I now surround myself in in my living room. Teal is my jewelry mixed w/silver and makes me feel rich and special…..and when I combine it with chocolate browns, I am in my own heaven. When I combine it w/cream, I feel jubilation, and when I add it to corals, it makes my heart beat faster. Colors do this to me, but teal wins out everytime.

  24. Shelley C says:

I’m a green person…from chartreuse to fern green gal. Greens are so relaxing and serene. I just looked up serene (to make sure I spelled it right LOL), and the definition is ‘clear, unclouded; undisturbed, calm’. PERFECT! I’ve been adding aquas to this palette for happiness I guess. I’m just so content in these colors….

  25. Nancy Bird says:

My favorite color is purple. To me, it’s BOLD! Makes a statement. I LOVE purple matched with green. When you think about it, it seems it would clash, but together, it’s a very striking combination.

  26. becky rhodes says:

I love lime green but don’t get a chance to use it as often as I would like. I’m doing a project now, Stitchers Garden and decided that one of my outer borders is going to be a lime green dot fabric. Makes me sooo happy just thinking about using it and I’m not even close to the borders yet!

  27. Michelle S says:

I love that quilt! It’s definitely a mood quilt. My favorite colors are blues. I have more blue in my stash than any other color. It makes me feel calm and happy. And I always feel like blue goes with everything.

  28. Donna says:

My favorite right now is anything off white, light beige, etc because all my quilts seem to need it! So, I’ve enjoyed the process of finding just the right color to match each one!

  29. Bobbie23nc says:

I love the color yellow. It always brightens my day and mood. It doesn’t play well with everything but it brings out the best in most.

  30. LisaT says:

Has to be bright green…the color is all around us and just screams happy to me! Nothing can put me in the kind of good mood that wearing bright green does!

  31. Shirley in Canada says:

I’m not working on the quilt….yet!! It reads “indecision” to me, but the purples say “happiness”, like “I found my way!” Although I really like purple, the color I am drawn to right now is the olive colored greens. Those are calming for me.

  32. Sara says:

Lately, my favorite color has been green. Not english racing green or hunter green. Not pastel green. No, I’ve been knee deep in a kind of chartrusey (is that a word) olivey green. Think early summer grass color. It reminds me of warm breezes after a cold spell, fresh air. It really calms and, at the same time, invigorates me. Love, love, love it!!

  33. Karen U says:

I just stumbled upon your website through google reader, although I was intrigued by a previous posting inviting crafters to your studio for an open house workshop. I live in Santa Rosa and feel your disappointment in our lack of a summer. It’s been more like an introduction to winter. I love your use of color and am particularly drawn to yellows and blues, especially together. They comfort me. If I had to pick a color based on my current emotions, it would have to be pink (fear) and black (depressed), but that’s a whole other story. Thanks!

    • Sherri Lynn Wood says:

Wow, even Santa Rosa suffered from the gloomy weather this summer? Yes working through a mood quilt with even my darkest moods has helped me with a certain kind of acceptance. I don’t always have to be happy, cheerful, calm, bright, etc. to be beautiful and lovable.

  34. choosing a favorite is difficult as Kristie states..however, I have been coveting BROWNS!! every range imaginable, along with other earth tones, browns are warmth, comfort, cozy, contentment, etc. to me..Now, I have this tremendous urge to make a mod quilt! I know this would be something that my hubby would like as well. Not sure I would do the curves, (yet) but something that would speak to others when they come in our home. kinda like a great big welcome hug!

    • Sherri Lynn Wood says:

Yes – browns have quite a fantastic range and are often overlooked. I encourage you to work on your own version of a mood quilt. You don’t have to do the curves. You can use any pattern or you could follow most of the quilt-along tutorial and avoid curves by sewing your wedge strips alternatively so that you come out with rectangle sections. These can be pieced together log-cabin style without any major curves.

  35. Rhonda Fryhoverr says:

I love all the colors of the rainbow. But always go to the green for summer fun. Have a great day quilting!

  36. Joan says:

Your work is incredible. I love the concept and the fact that you’re willing to share with the world. I think that my favorite color (judging from my closet- not my fabric) is currently aqua. I’m seeing it as an indication that I need some beach time!! There’s nothing quite as soothing for whatever ails you as the beach.

  37. I’m not quilting along, but my favorite color seems to be green. I tend to use it a lot in my quilts. It’s a soothing color to me. :)

  38. TheaM says:

I like contrasting colors – navy with pale lilac & pink, or turquoise with bright yellow and red. I love red and white or red and black, or red, black and white… lots of different colors add interest!
I also love the old order Amish quilts with their simpler layouts and solid colors – and wool is so easy to quilt!

Warm colors arouse the appetite, enflame the senses, stir the soul.
Cool colors offer a calming influence to the quilting passions.
Red and turquoise are my ‘go to’ colors when I don’t feel sure about a combination, I go with either of them.

  39. Lori kay says:

I am very much drawn to apple green/acid green these days. It makes me feel energetic and happy to be playing with fabric and color. Can a quilt exude energy?

    • Sherri Lynn Wood says:

Yes a quilt can exude the energy and presence of it’s maker, in my opinion. That’s what I always strive for in my own work.

  40. Laurie says:

Mod Mood makes me think of brights – oranges and pinks with splashes of bright white — not really “hot”, but bright (?)

  41. Regina says:

I am not sewing along – but have been inspired by orange lately – I find it warm, vibrant, invigorating, and strong… plays nice with most others – if you have an open mind!!!

  42. LouAnn says:

I have always loved the color purple. Reminds me of princesses and castles and the color of make-believe.

  43. Robbin Skinner says:

Pink and Yellow!!! Makes me feel energized with the two of them together! Love your Blog :) Swinging by from a link courtesy Pat Sloan http://networkedblogs.com/70gW4

  44. Heather says:

I am curious as to how the curved pieces will end up in the quilt. Do you applique them or piece them together?

    I know, i know, I’m jumping ahead.

My favourite colours are probably indigo blues, for their depth and mystery and coolness, and a certain orange-y red linen that excites and lifts my spirit and that I loved so much I bought the whole bolt. But you don’t have to enter me in the draw cause I was so lucky to win the mantra CD last time.

    • Sherri Lynn Wood says:

The curves are done by machine as much as possible. Sorry to draw the process out so long but there will be a post soon on curve piecing techniques.

  45. Melissa says:

I love those greens. To me they’re contentment, and being comfortable. The oranges in them make it seem like you’re looking forward to something.

Thanks for sharing in you process!

  46. Sammie says:

I’m not currently working on a mood quilt, but I am working on a string quilt of “monochrome” blocks – and I’ve discovered they’re not really monochrome at all! If I look at one of my blocks that is supposed to be all blues for example, there is such a range of colors and moods represented. Blue is my favorite color, and it can be so many things – dark and serious, light and airy, sparkling and full of energy…

  47. Mary Keasler says:

I have just recently begun dyeing fabric and am totally hooked. In beginning the dyeing process, I has discovered that I am constantly drawn to using very deep & bright reds and oranges. It just gives me a giddy, happy feeling when they are all washed, dried and ironed.
When I ran across your curves I was instantly inspired. I am more of a curves person than and straights person. I plan to sort all of my colors very soon and begin to play with my version you’ve inspired. So far your curves say to me: mellow and brooding with hints of surprise. Very interesting. I can’t wait to see more and more.

  48. Mimi says:

I love the blues range it is mysterious, cool, refreshing and calming. Thanks for the chance!

  49. Cynthia says:

This one is easy for me. Much of your quilt “reads” sadness or darkness……the greys, deep puples. Then I see the turquoise. Small bits of it but immediately cheer me up. I feel like the turquoise is the blue skies shining through the greyness. I am really enjoying reading your processs and thoughts behind this quilt.

  50. Kristin L says:

I’m not making a mod mood quilt, but I am enjoying watching your process. I absolutely love your curves as you have them laid out here. Sinuous!

    • Sherri Lynn Wood says:

Tell me your favorite color and the emotions or memories you associate with that color Kristin, and you will be entered into the giveaway.

      • Kristin L says:

Choosing a favorite color is hard! I love them all at different times and for different reasons. I do l keep coming back to blue. I think it’s the easiest to live with. It can be rich and sophisticated, bright and happy, or soft and serene. I can find a blue for my every mood. Right now I am drawn to turquoise-y blues because of my tropical location, but I keep tempering them with taupe which probably reflects an underlying homesickness and malaise.
